Do Things Right First

When you are starting a new business it is only natural to want to do things ‘right’. To be honest, every business journey is going to be different and what is seemingly right for one will be different for you.

Prior to becoming The Planned Duo we were both working on our own independent ventures, however when we decided to start our partnership we found that we were following similar steps when starting out.

So how do you take your idea and develop it into a business?

1. Get Clear On Your Intention

Whilst developing a well recognised brand will take time to build, try and think about what the core of your business is about. Why is your idea important? Why do you want to share your big idea with the world? Once you’re clear on your why, it will be able to guide you with every business decision you need to make.

2. Know Your Niche

Now that you know your why, you need to determine if there is an audience for your why. Ask yourself, what problem are you trying to solve? Is it a problem that people need help with? And if so, how will you solve it? Whilst you may have a great idea, it is important to not let your own struggles determine your great ideas. Know your niche, understand their struggles and create solutions for their biggest problems.

3. Create your brand

Your brand is so much more than what your logo looks like or what colours you choose. Your brand is a representation of who you are as a business and it’s important that your visual identity and brand is only created once you know what you want to say. When it comes to designing a logo, choose colours that align with your vision and reflect the overall mood you want to create. Your logo will become memorable in the market and will set the foundation for your signature style. We are both so passionate about branding and well considered design concepts so once you define your intention and understand your niche, only then work on creating the visual experience for your target market and/or ideal customer.

4. Develop your systems

Would we be The Planned Duo if we didn’t have a passion for planning and organisation? The best thing you can do as a new business is implement efficient systems so your business can run professionally and productively.

Create a list of recurring tasks and determine which systems and processes should be implemented so that you can work efficiently every single day. From here you will be able to operate, manage and effectively grow your business knowing you have the right systems behind you to flourish.

5. Create consistency

When there are so many things to do, being consistent can be challenging. However, delivering on your promises is a must when establishing trust with your audience. E.g. if you tell your community to expect an email from you each week with X,Y & X, make sure you show up and deliver! This is why it’s important to start small and gradually build momentum. If you can’t show up on social media everyday, don’t set the expectation that you will, because your loyal community will only be as loyal as you are to them.

6.  Post relevant content

When we started our business we had so many ideas and services that fitted perfectly under our brand, however, it soon became apparent that it was overwhelming for our audience and difficult to market. At the beginning of a new business it’s only natural to want to do EVERYTHING but as you grow, you will realise that doing everything isn’t realistic. Listen to your community and create content that resonates with your niche and adds value to their life.

Ready to take action? These are your next steps:

  1. Grab a piece of paper or a notebook and slowly start to work though your thoughts for each one of the steps above. Really think about the questions and let yourself be open to any feelings or thoughts. Write down any words, phrases or ideas that come to mind. There are no right or wrong answers at this stage, this is your time to be free with your thoughts without worrying what works.
  2. Now is the time to review your ideas and answers in a more realistic light. Highlight your why, connect the common trends and during this process you will hopefully determine your niche and pin-point the problem you need to solve. The best part is, by removing the pressure of what may have been ‘right or wrong’ in step 1, you’ve allowed yourself to be open to endless possibilities and can happily create a solution to a problem you’re passionate about.
  3. You’re ready to start working on your brand, systems and content!
