Whether you’ve already got a side hustle whilst working a 9-5 job or thinking about starting one, this is the perfect blog post for you. Why you might ask? Well, we have been tackling the 9 to 5 with a side hustle for a couple of years now and although it’s a constant rollercoaster of emotions, it’s one rollercoaster we recommend jumping onto if you have a dream of owning your own business. Nothing worth having comes easy and you’re the only one who can make it happen.
We aren’t going to sugar coat it; it hasn’t been effortless, however with dedication, drive and passion anything is possible. Some might wonder why we still haven’t taken the plunge and left our full-time jobs, the truth is it’s not just as simple as ‘I QUIT!’ you need to make sure you have a good plan in place and money behind you because the last thing you want when you finally go out on your own is to have to go back to working for someone else again.
Where to start? Let us share our top 5 tips for breaking through the ‘9 to 5 with a side hustle’ lifestyle.
1. Make sure your side hustle is something you love
Don’t do something you wouldn’t want to do in your spare time, because girl that’s exactly what you’ll be doing. You have to LOVE your side hustle so much that it doesn’t feel like work. So if you don’t have that feeling of excitement when getting home after a long day to set-up and start working on your business, then you haven’t chosen the right path and you won’t succeed (sorry to be harsh, but it’s better you know now.)
2. Constantly smash your full-time job
Choosing to have a side hustle is one thing but don’t take advantage of your full time job. Whether you work for someone else or yourself, your work ethic should always be the same. Just because it’s not your ‘end game’ doesn’t mean you still can’t learn and grow in your current role. The way we see it ‘Do something well or not at all’.
3. Don’t invest money you don’t have.
The best decision we ever made was to not invest money we didn’t have. From the beginning we structured our finances so that we would always have more money coming in than going out and this has set us up to go out on our own eventually without any debt. We also set a limit for how much we were both initially prepared to invest to start our venture and from there structured our financial decisions focusing on what we had to work with.
4. Have a plan
We can’t explain how important it is to have a plan. Having a spontaneous lifestyle and going with the flow is one thing but maybe leave that for the weekend, because it has no place in your business. Set yourself goals and expectations for what you want to achieve for the business and where you want it to go. We will go into more detail for creating a successful business plan in our upcoming blogs.
5. Use your time wisely.
We take advantage of every single spare moment we have throughout the day. We are lucky enough to work together at our 9 to 5 job so during our quick 10 minute breaks we always touch base, discuss anything important and gather our thoughts so we know what we’re managing for the day. We use our 3 Month Plan to structure our time so that we can balance everything important to us, from 9 to 5 work, business, fitness, partners and even a little down time. We all have the same hours in the day, so use yours wisely and we promise amazing things will happen.
We will continue to deliver tips and support wherever we can on this journey of yours.
